With the right planning, spending time with your little one during the summer months can be wonderful. Here are some things you can do to make the most of the season.
Choose baby-friendly outings and activities
There are plenty of great outdoor activities that both you and your baby can enjoy on a summer day.
Here are a few ideas:
- Wading pools—Beat the heat and wet your feet on those extra-sunny days. You and your baby will have a blast!
- Petting zoos—They’re a fun way to get outside and introduce your baby to the animals they’ve seen in their books.
- Outdoor concerts—Grab a blanket, some picnic food, and you’re good to go! Spend quality time with your baby enjoying great music.
- Malls—If you need a break from the sun but still want to get out of the house, this is an excellent option.
Remember to keep both you and baby hydrated
Make a habit of packing a sippy cup or bottle in the diaper bag when you leave the house so your baby is never thirsty. If you’re breastfeeding, give your baby the opportunity to nurse more often—and don’t forget to take care of yourself too by drinking frequently.
Protect your baby’s sensitive skin from the sun
Be sure to dress him or her with proper clothes, a sunhat, and even bring along a sun umbrella with UV protection when the rays are really strong. It is best to keep babies under 6 months of age out of the sun. Speak to your doctor about the appropriate use of sunscreen for infants and newborns. When your baby is 6 months old, you can start applying sunscreen on your baby. Always be sure to read and follow the label of your sunscreen product.
With the right planning and choice of activities, you’ll enjoy a summer with your baby that you’ll remember for years to come.
